A pendant light size guide comes down to one idea: the fixture should feel proportionate to what hangs beneath or around it. Too small and it looks lost. Too large and it overwhelms the room. These rules keep you in the safe zone.
Rule one: diameter for a single pendant over a table
For one pendant centered over a dining table, choose a diameter roughly one half to two thirds of the table width. A 120 cm wide table pairs well with a pendant 60 to 80 cm across. This fills the space visually without crowding it.
For round tables, the same fraction applies to the table diameter. A 90 cm round table takes a 45 to 60 cm pendant nicely.
Rule two: sizing pendants over a kitchen island
Measure the island length and divide by the number of pendants you plan to hang.
- One pendant: diameter about one third of the island length.
- Two pendants: each about one quarter of the island length.
- Three pendants: each about one fifth of the island length.
A 240 cm island, for example, works with one 80 cm pendant, two 60 cm pendants, or three 45 to 50 cm pendants. Leave at least 15 cm (6 inches) of clearance between the pendant edges and the island ends.
Rule three: sizing for an open room
When a pendant hangs in open space rather than over furniture, scale it to the room. Add the room's length and width in meters, then convert that number to centimeters for a rough ideal diameter. A 4 by 5 meter room sums to 9, suggesting a pendant around 90 cm across. This is a starting point, not a law. Tall ceilings and bold statement pieces can push larger.
Rule four: rows of pendants
When hanging a row, size is a group decision. Two or three smaller pendants spaced evenly often look better than one oversized one, and they spread light more evenly down the length of a table or island. Keep each pendant the same size and hang them at identical heights. Even spacing is usually 60 to 75 cm (24 to 30 inches) apart.
Rule five: consider the fixture height, not just diameter
Tall teardrop and lantern pendants add visual weight even at a modest diameter. A slender 40 cm teardrop can hold its own over a table where a flat 40 cm disc would look small. When reading the rules above, round up slightly for tall, sculptural silhouettes and round down for shallow, wide ones.
Moroccan pendants and scale
Pierced brass pendants have a presence that outscales their measurements. The pattern, the glow, and the sculptural shape make a medium Moroccan pendant read larger than a plain metal shade of the same diameter. Sizing for double height and vaulted spaces
Rooms with tall or vaulted ceilings swallow normal sized pendants. In a space with 4 meters or more of ceiling height, scale up boldly: a pendant that would overwhelm a standard room looks right at home. Consider hanging the pendant lower than the tables suggest, into the lived in zone of the room, so it relates to the furniture rather than floating near the ceiling. For very grand spaces, a cluster of pendants at staggered heights fills vertical space better than one giant fixture.
Common sizing mistakes
- Choosing by the catalog photo. Fixtures always look bigger in product shots. Check the listed diameter and hold a cardboard circle of that size in the room.
- Sizing for the room and forgetting the furniture. A pendant must relate to what is beneath it first, the room second.
- Mixing wildly different scales. If the island pendants are large and sculptural, keep the sink pendant modest so they do not compete.
- Ignoring the cord or chain. A long visible drop adds visual weight. In rooms with very high ceilings, the drop itself becomes part of the look, so choose it deliberately.
