Solid brass lights are easy to care for. With the right routine, a brass pendant or sconce will glow for decades. Here is how to clean brass lights without damaging the finish.
Regular dusting
Dust is the main enemy. Wipe your brass lights with a soft, dry microfiber cloth every few weeks. For pierced patterns, use a soft brush to reach into the openings where dust settles. Always make sure the light is off and cool before you touch it.
Deeper cleaning
For fingerprints and grime, dampen a soft cloth with warm water and a drop of mild dish soap. Wipe gently, then dry immediately with a clean cloth. Never let water sit on brass, especially inside pierced openings, because it can leave spots.
What to avoid
Never use abrasive pads, steel wool, or scouring powder. They scratch the surface permanently. Avoid harsh chemicals, bleach, and ammonia based cleaners. Do not use commercial brass polish on antique or lacquered finishes unless you are sure of the finish type. Polish strips patina, which is often the look you paid for.
Caring for the patina
Many Moroccan lights are finished to develop a natural patina, a darker tone that settles into the pattern over time. This is desirable and part of the character of brass. If you prefer the bright polished look, a gentle brass cleaner made for unlacquered brass will restore the shine. If you love the aged look, simply dust and leave the patina alone.
Cleaning around bulbs and wiring
Always switch the light off at the wall and let the bulb cool before cleaning. Do not spray any liquid near the socket or wiring. If the inside of the shade needs attention, remove the bulb first and wipe the interior with a dry cloth.
How often should you clean?
Dusting: every two to four weeks. Damp wipe: two to four times a year, or when you notice fingerprints. Deep polish: only when you want to restore brightness, and only on polished finishes.

Can I use vinegar or lemon on brass lights? We do not recommend it. Acids can etch the surface and damage antique finishes. Warm water and mild soap is safer.
My brass light is turning dark. Is that normal? Yes. Brass naturally darkens with exposure to air. This patina is normal and many owners prefer it. It can be polished off if you want the bright look back.
