Sizing your chandelier
Use the room formula: add the room’s length and width in feet, and use that number in inches as the starting diameter. A 14 by 16 foot living room suggests a chandelier around 30 inches (76 cm) wide. Over a dining table, choose a chandelier one half to two thirds the width of the table, hung 75 to 90 cm (30 to 36 inches) above the tabletop. Where to hang one
Dining room. The classic spot. Centered over the table, it sets the mood for every meal.
Living room. A Moroccan chandelier anchors the seating area and becomes the room’s focal point.
Entryway and foyer. A lantern chandelier in the entry makes a first impression nothing else can match. Hang it so the bottom sits at least 210 cm (7 feet) above the floor.
Bedroom. A smaller chandelier over the bed replaces the ceiling light with something far more atmospheric. Keep it high enough to sit up comfortably.
Stairwell. A long drop lantern chandelier fills the vertical space of a stairwell beautifully.
